Celebrating Young Voices at the Young City Poets Festival
On Thursday 12th June, Ms Morris had the pleasure of accompanying two of our talented Year 8 students to the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral for the grand finale of the Young City Poets Festival—the culminating event of the inspiring Young City Poets project that Harris Academy Bermondsey has proudly taken part in throughout the academic year.
This enriching initiative invited students to engage deeply with poetry and creative writing. As part of the project, students experienced a cultural visit, took part in a professional poetry workshop led by spoken word artist Paul Cree, and produced a wealth of outstanding creative work. We are incredibly proud that six of our students had their writing selected for publication in a national anthology, which has been distributed to over 1,000 schools across the country.
The project reached its inspiring conclusion with two of our students performing their original poetry in front of a live audience at St Paul’s Cathedral—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a celebration of their voices.
Sakina reflected:
“I found that being a young poet was a great experience, and I would 100% do it again if I had the chance. St Paul’s Cathedral was so beautiful, and the views of the space were amazing.”
Nevaeh added:
“The opportunity to become a young poet felt inspiring. Just being able to stand in St Paul’s Cathedral and admire the art was lovely.”
The Young City Poets project is a wonderful opportunity for our students to explore the power and beauty of the written word. Creative writing not only nurtures imagination and confidence, but also supports mental wellbeing and gives young people a powerful platform to express themselves.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the National Literacy Trust for organising such an impactful and inspiring project. Their dedication to promoting literacy and creativity has made a lasting difference in the lives of our students.
We are immensely proud of all our participants and look forward to continuing to champion student creativity in the years to come.
