World Book Day, 7th March 2019 - Pictures
To mark World Book Day on Thursday 7th March we invited staff and students to dress as a character or in clothes reflecting a text of their choice. And you really went to town!
Here are just a few of your wonderful costumes. Everyone donated £1 to support the academy’s fundraising goals too, so we raised money to improve our literacy provision or donate to the charity Refuge too. Thank you everyone. We're very #ProudToBeHAB of you all.
Great book giveaway...
World Book Day celebrates the joy and value of books and reading, especially for children. To help girls progress on their reading journeys, each one will receive a £1 World Book Day Book Token or a free book from the academy.
The World Book Day tokens can either be exchanged for one of the twelve special £1 World Book Day books or used to get £1 off any book costing £2.99 or more. You can find out more about the books at www.worldbookday.com/books
Those Who Read Succeed
By XueJun, Year 10
Whilst World Book Day is commonly perceived as a day to dress up, Harris Academy Bermondsey celebrates it in a different way as well. For the past three years, we’ve endeavoured to raising our students’ level of happiness and understanding by giving away books.
When asked why she thought this was important, Miss Morris said that students who read have “higher levels of happiness and better emotional awareness". Reading isn’t just an activity we’re forced to do but “an outlet for any stress”. Books the students received included:
Year 9: Africa’s Tarnished Name
Year 10: Letter From Birmingham Jail
Year 11: Why We Should All Be Feminists
Ruqiya, Year 9, said: “Africa’s Tarnished Name is an excellent prose that beautifully explains a culture that is destroyed by post-colonialism.”
The whole event was made possible by Miss Morris and the English and Humanities department. Thank you for helping us strive for a balance for better!
