HAB Girls Get a Taste for Indoor Rowing
All girls in years 7 and 8 had the chance to try indoor rowing at a ‘taster’ session recently, run by professional rowing coach Isobel Turner from London Youth Rowing.
It was a great chance for all students to try this new and exciting sport. Girls who performed particularly well were invited to join the HAB rowing team, which has weekly indoor rowing training sessions and will represent HAB in the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships next March. They will also have the opportunity to experience outdoor rowing at Surrey Quays Water Sports Centre.
Year 7 top places
The top five times in Year 7 were achieved by:
- 1st place - Naira
- 2nd place - Nabila
- 3rd Place - Tuka
- 4th Place - Mariam
- 5th Place - Jane
“The lively Year 7s grasped the skills so quickly,” said Ms Kelly. “The top five rowers were full of enthusiasm to find out that they had been selected for the HAB Rowing team.”
Myah from Year 7 said: “It was a really fun experience and I am glad I got the chance to participate. It made me believe in myself that I don’t always have to do things I like and I should try new things.”
Year 8 winners
Five Year 8 students from the HAB Rowing team of 2016/2017 have secured another space on the rowing team. The top six in Year 8 were:
- 1st place - Fatimah
- 2nd place - Keira
- 3rd place - Amna
- 4th place - Mabinty
- 5th place - Gabrielle
- 6th place - Efemena
“Your girls are full of enthusiasm and were really good when they were on the machines,” said Isobel. “To get through over 300 students in a day was amazing for me. It was definitely the loudest taster day I have ever done!”
Sixth Form support
Special thanks to the HAB Sixth Form Sports Leader and the team of fellow sixth formers for helping to ensure the event ran smoothly.
"I choose to volunteer in these lessons during my free period as it provides me with skills that I can transfer into other aspects in my life," said sixth former Susan, Year 12. "Sports has always interested me as it is a chance to have fun, work in a team whilst keeping fit at the same time."
Sixth former Samah, Year 12, said: "Watching the younger years get excited and their faces lighting up was a great experience. I saw the girls get inspired and some find a new passion they could possibly pursue in the future."
Thank you and a massive well done to all the girls who took part. Watch out for more in-house and inter-school rowing competitions later this term. We’re #ProudToBeHAB of all our rowers.
