Healthy Food, Healthy Mind - Food Theme Day For Year 7

Year 7 students at HAB engaged in sessions on world foods, allergy awareness, gut health and mental health during a special day on food, facilitated by our catering supplier, Chartwells.

Students had wonderful opportunities to learn about food cultures around the world and the energy they contain from a nutritional perspective. They also learnt the importance of allergy awareness.

Year 7 were exposed to how product design is used to entice people towards unhealthy food choices. They explored mental health and the importance of talking and listening in a non-judgemental way, and also learnt about the connection between our guts and brains, the microbiome and the importance of a gut-healthy diet.

The students also worked through metacognition booklets throughout the day and ended with metacognition assembly.

What students said…

The brain is connected to the gut. The brain sends messages to the gut and stomach so we need to eat healthy food.” Tahira, Year 7

“Different colours produce different vitamins.” Shenayah, Year 7

“I will do my research before I start a new diet because I don’t know the impact that it might have on me, because all bodies are different and not all diets are for everyone.” Zahra, Year 7

“We learnt how stress and emotions can affect our wellbeing.” Zakiyah, Year 7

“We discussed how eating disorders are linked to mental health and eating a balanced diet can support mental health,” Nicole, Year 7

“We learnt that no food is bad, it is about what you eat and how you eat it.” Nadia, Year 7
