UniPathways Science Course Promotes University Access
A group of six Year 10 students are completing their second year of a UniPathways course at Harris Academy Bermondsey, run by science teacher Dr Breen. The course is part of The Brilliant Club and Researchers in School commitment to promote university access and subject expertise in schools.
In the first year, the students completed a set of six tutorials based around Dr Breen’s PhD thesis and learnt about structural biology at a university level. The students wrote a 1,500 word dissertation and gave a presentation on the subject.
The human heart
In their second year, the students are following a series of tutorials delivered by Dr Breen looking at the human heart and becoming experts on the topic. They have completed heart dissections independently (pictured) and will complete a final assessment to end the course.
Their work has been of incredibly high standard, working on A Level Biology topics and beyond, and they are able to bring their expertise back to their lessons and their classmates.
UniPathways is happening at many different schools across the Harris Federation, across different subjects, run by 'Researchers in Schools' teachers such as our own Dr Breen.
The Research Leader in Education Award is a fully-funded, three-year programme of professional development for teachers on the Researchers in Schools programme. This award has been designed to optimise the skills teachers have gained from their PhD and maximise the impact they have on the pupils that they teach.
