First Lego League Competition at Queen Mary University
By Adikat, Year 8.
On Saturday 25 January 2020, two teams with a mixture of students from years 7, 8, 9 set off to Queen Mary University to compete against many other amazing teams and schools.
The teams had to program robots for tasks to earn points. Teams also had to pitch and talk about how their robot was designed specifically for a particular task, before being judged. Teams had discussed core values and how well they were used.
The two teams kept being resilient despite challenges faced. At the end of the competition, Team 1 were placed 13th and Team 2 were placed 6th, which was outstanding. Miss Newell, a computer science teacher, said “I was so proud".

Miss Newell adds: "The students were mentored by someone called Akhil who works for Google Deepmind. He taught them how to build and program robots. The competition was the First Lego League which involved designing and building robots to complete challenges. I was genuinely impressed with the students' achievements as at the start of the year they could not code a robot at all. But one group built and programmed a robot that travelled across a table, and moved a box from one area of the table to another. Not an easy feat as their instructions had to be really precise! Girls also had to prepare a presentation about sustainability and present a suggested solution to improve the environment."
Another student said: "It was a learning experience for us. We hope to improve for the next competition. We learnt about coding in general. Before I joined, I did not know anything about coding."
