September Reopening - Latest Information for Parents

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come to the end of the Summer term and start the Summer holiday we want to offer a sincere and heart felt thank you to all of you for the work you have done to help guide your daughters through this pandemic.

It cannot have been an easy task to balance homelife with encouraging your daughters to engage with their school work at the same time as dealing with all of the challenges that Covid-19 has caused so many. We hope that you and your families can have some time to enjoy the activities that are now possible and that in some way you can mark the movement from school term to holidays.

Academy holiday times and Summer School

The academy will close for the Summer break from today until 2nd September. From August 10th there will be a skeleton staff on site preparing for a safe return in September and to run the Headley Summer School. The academy does, however, remain closed for general enquiries until we open with a full staff from 2nd September.

You will have been sent a progress report and a link to our Head Start for September work packs.

Click here to see the Head Start for September Work Packs.

The work is designed to help your daughter remember the things which will be important to know to be successful in September. We would very much like your daughter to enjoy at least a three-week break from virtual learning.

We have employed Graduate Learning Mentors to work from the 10th August to help students with their Summer work and to run the Headley Summer School. Your daughter will be able to log in to Microsoft Teams and get help with English, Mathematics, Science, Geography and Languages work.

Your daughter will find that she has been added to some new classes called “Geography Help”, or “Maths Help” she should use these groups to ask for help on the holiday work. The Graduate Learning Mentor will not have access to emails sent to class teachers or messages in other classes.

Start of term - dates and times

We are very much looking forward to September and having all of the girls back with us. We have changed a number of our procedures to minimise risk from Covid-19. The girls will be taught in consistent class groups and there will be very little movement around the academy.

We will spend time inducting your daughter into the new safety procedures so that she knows how she can help to keep herself, her family and her school community safe. To facilitate this induction your daughter will return to the academy on the following date. Please remember she will have moved up a year so if she was in Year 8 last year she will now be in Year 9.

This means that there will be a very slight change to the academy day. This change will be in operation temporarily until the guidance changes.

Your daughter will have the same quantity of time in lessons and will be taught her full curriculum entitlement. The slightly shorter day takes account of the fact that students are staying in their classrooms and will not be moving around the academy.

Break time

Your daughter will take her break in her classroom. We have trebled the number of toilets in general use around the building so that she will have access to toilets close to her classroom at break. Drinking water will be available at the hand washing stations on entrance to the academy. All girls will be able to fill their water bottles at the start of the day and at lunch time, they will not be able to do this at break time.

Girls will need to bring their own bottle as cups are unsuitable for carrying water around site. Unfortunately, we will initially unable to offer food at break and your daughter may want to bring in some snacks to eat at break. A reminder that students are not permitted to bring in fizzy or energy drinks, multi packs/large bags of crisps and other unhealthy snacks.

School uniform

Students will need to be in full school uniform from September including the blazer and school bag. The list for this is on our Uniform page.

The changing facilities will not be available during September so your daughter should wear Harris Academy Bermondsey PE kit to school only on the days when she has PE. A reminder that this PE kit is the HAB T-shirt, plain navy jogging bottoms, shorts or skort and the HAB fleece. Hoodies and other branded sweatshirts are not allowed and will be confiscated. If your daughter does not have the HAB fleece she may wear the school jumper. There will be no PE lesson on her first day so she should wear full HAB uniform.

In this letter we have tried to set out the you need to know about the start of term. We will write to you again on the 7th August and each Friday thereafter with any updates that you need and the academy response to any updated guidance from the government.

We would like to wish your daughters and your families a lovely Summer.

Yours sincerely

Gillian Hodgson, Acting Principal
