Announcement

Starting Year 7 in September - Information for Parents

Dear Parent/Carer,

As we come to the end of the Summer term and start the Summer holiday we want to offer a sincere and heart felt thank you to all of you for the work you have done so far to help guide your daughter’s transition to HAB.

It cannot have been an easy task to balance homelife with encouraging your daughter to engage with their school work at the same time as dealing with all of the challenges that covid19 has caused so many. We hope that you and your families can have some time to enjoy the activities that are now possible and that in some way you can mark the movement from school term to holidays.

Academy holiday times

The academy will close for the Summer break from today until 2nd September. From August 10th there will be a skeleton staff on site preparing for a safe return in September and to run the Headley Summer School. The academy does, however, remain closed for general enquiries until we open with a full staff from 2nd September.

We have prepared a Year 6 Transition Enrichment pack for your daughter to engage with over the summer, and this will also be uploaded onto the Transition Passport page. Please do encourage her to also look at the Transition Passport page on the website – a dedicated space for our Year 6 HAB girls!

Click here to visit the Transition Passport section of our website.

Induction day

Your daughter’s first day of term will be Thursday 3rd September. As your daughter has not spent much time onsite thus far, we will be running this day as an Induction Day, providing your daughter with an opportunity to meet their tutor, class group, engage in some ice breaking activities, and understand our systems and processes.

On this day only, your daughter should arrive to the main reception from 9.20am. Please note this is later than the usual start time of 8.40am, as it’s their Induction day.

Your daughter will be dismissed through the student exit at 3pm. On Friday 4th September, your daughter should arrive at the normal Year 7 arrival time of 8.40am.

Start of Term

We are very much looking forward to September and having all of the girls back with us. We have changed a number of our procedures to minimise risk from covid19. The girls will be taught in consistent class groups and there will be very little movement around the academy. We will spend time inducting your daughter into the new safety procedures so that she knows how she can help to keep herself, her family and her school community safe.  To facilitate this induction your daughter will return to the academy on the following date. Please remember she will have moved up a year so if she was in year 8 last year she will now be in year 9.

Your daughter will have the same quantity of time in lessons and will be taught her full curriculum entitlement. The slightly shorter day takes account of the fact that students are staying in their classrooms and will not be moving around the academy.

Break time

Your daughter will take her break in her classroom. We have trebled the number of toilets in general use around the building so that she will have access to toilets close to her classroom at break. Drinking water will be available at the hand washing stations on entrance to the academy. All girls will be able to fill their water bottles at the start of the day and at lunch time, they will not be able to do this at break time. Girls will need to bring their own bottle as cups are unsuitable for carrying water around site.  Unfortunately, we will initially unable to offer food at break and your daughter may want to bring in some snacks to eat at break. A reminder that students are not permitted to bring in fizzy or energy drinks, multi packs/large bags of crisps and other unhealthy snacks.

Language study

At HAB, our students either study French or Spanish. At present, your daughter has been assigned to one of those languages at random.  If you do have any preference as to whether your daughter studies French or Spanish, or if you are a native French or Spanish speaker, please email Marta Valentin, Head of Languages Faculty, at marta.valentin@harrisbermondsey.org.uk by Wednesday 2nd September.

School uniform

Our Year 7 Uniform sizing day is taking place on Friday 14th August. This is not a compulsory event, but we appreciate that some of you may value an opportunity to see the sizing of the uniform before placing an order. Please note we will be adhering to Covid-19 regulations for clothing retail shops at this event, and as a result there will be some limitations, including adhering to social distancing at all times, as well as the time you should come onto site. We have split the year group into 30 minute slots. Please do arrive onto site at the time indicated below by your surname in alphabetical order:

10.00am

Abdi – Ali

10.30am

Aliu – Batista Evora

11.00am

Bell – Danaci

11.30am

Danfa – Fernandes

12.00pm

Frimpong – Jones

12.30pm

Joseph – Lee-Comber

1.00pm

Lewis – Moya-Jaldin

1.30pm

Mrozowska – Oyelaja

2.00pm

Pala – Stupple

2.30pm

Tak - Zhang

If online ordering is a worry for you, there will also be an offer for you to bring cash and buy vouchers on the day, which you will then be able to use to order the uniform on your phone or on laptops that we will have ready for your use whilst onsite.

When you place your order, there will be free delivery for orders over £50. You can select your own address or Harris Bermondsey as the delivery location. If you are ordering to Harris Bermondsey, please do put your daughter’s name on the delivery item so we can ensure we keep orders packaged up and Covid secure. Although there are some manufacturing delays at present, you are still able to order these items online, they will just arrive at a later delivery date than the items that are in stock. This is the case for our blazers which will be delivered from the 31st August. Please do not worry, there will be no expectation that Year 7 students are in their blazers until Monday 7th September.

The changing facilities will not be available during September so your daughter should wear Harris Academy Bermondsey PE kit to school only on the days when she has PE. We understand there is some delay to our Year 6 Uniform delivery days, so we appreciate your daughter may not be in the full PE kit in the first week of school

In this letter we have tried to set out the information you need to know about the start of term. We will write to you again on the 7th August and each Friday thereafter with any updates that you need and the academy response to any updated guidance from the government. We would like to wish your daughter and your families a lovely Summer.

Yours sincerely

Gillian Hodgson

Acting Principal
