Coronavirus - Information for Parents/Carers

Dear Parents and Carers

Responding to novel coronavirus (2019-nCov)

I write to advise you of the precautionary measures we are taking as an Academy in response to the current outbreak of novel coronavirus (2019-nCov).

At present there are a very small number of confirmed cases in the UK and there is no reason for parents and students to worry about the risk of infection, which is extremely low.

We would draw your attention to NHS guidance to seek medical advice if any members of your family show symptoms. Please also be aware of current guidance for those who have been in a part of the world where the virus outbreak is more widespread or have been in contact with someone who has recently travelled home from one of those areas.

The symptoms include tiredness, fever, cough and breathing difficulties, which could progress to severe pneumonia.

If you or any of your family have returned from Wuhan or Hubei Province in the last 14 days, the Government advice is that you self-isolate, stay indoors, avoid contact with other people and contact NHS 111.

Any student returning from mainland China must have been given the ‘all clear’ by a medical professional, and this evidence must be provided to the Attendance Officer, before they return to school.

In the unlikely circumstance a student is unable to return to school immediately due to them requiring isolation, the Academy will provide work which can be completed at home until such a time as they are able to return to the Academy.

We will notify the local authority education welfare service of any student who is absent from the Academy because they require isolation under these circumstances and no such student will be penalised for their reduced attendance.

Please rest assured that we encourage our students, as a matter of course, to be vigilant in ensuring basic hygiene measures are followed, such as regularly washing hands and always sneezing into a tissue, to stem the spread of viruses.

If there is any update or change to this advice, it will be posted on the Academy’s website.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yours faithfully

Rebecca Iles-Smith, Principal
