Harris Academy Bermondsey Hosts Festive Christmas Lunch with Age UK

Harris Academy Bermondsey was delighted to welcome members of Age UK Bermondsey for a festive Christmas lunch, celebrating the joy of the season together. While we’re a little behind in sharing the news, the event was such a heartwarming occasion that we couldn’t miss highlighting it!

Students played a key role in making the afternoon truly special. They helped set up, served lunch, and ensured a warm, welcoming atmosphere for all the guests. Many students went above and beyond in their roles — from serving tea and coffee to chatting with guests, running the Christmas quiz, and supporting the raffle — showing dedication, kindness, and care throughout the event.

Adding a musical touch to the celebration, Year 10 students Lina and Aibhlinn performed O Holy Night — the same talented singers who had captivated audiences at our Winter Concert. Lina reflected on the experience:

"I was so happy to help because I love making people happy. Singing is such a big part of my life, and performing for the lunch felt natural and joyful. Seeing everyone smile made the experience really special. It reminded me why I love sharing music and why I want to continue performing in community events — it’s such a powerful way to connect with people."

Aibhlinn, who also helped serve and chat with guests, shared:

"Even if it’s outside your comfort zone, connecting with people of all ages is such a learning experience. Singing and helping at the lunch was fun, rewarding, and gave me a real sense of community. I had lovely conversations with the guests and even discovered connections that spanned continents! Events like this show you how valuable it is to reach out and engage with people beyond your usual circle."

The lunch was expertly coordinated by Liz Magee, with Christmas music playing throughout and a festive atmosphere enjoyed by all. Principal Gizle added:

"It was wonderful to open our doors and welcome our community for this special celebration. Seeing our students giving their time and care so generously, performing and supporting our guests, really highlights the warmth, spirit, and kindness that make Harris Academy Bermondsey such a special place. We very much look forward to welcoming our friends from Age UK back again next year."

We are incredibly proud of all our students — not only Lina and Aibhlinn, but everyone who helped make the Christmas lunch such a success. Their dedication, energy, and compassion created a memorable celebration and a wonderful example of the spirit of giving and community at Harris Academy Bermondsey.
