Basmala Shines at Jack Petchey 'Speak Out' Challenge
We're hugely #ProudToBeHAB of Basmala, Year 10, who yesterday competed in the Jack Petchey “Speak Out” Challenge Southwark Final, which took place at Harris Academy Peckham. Although Basmala didn't win a prize, we are really proud of all the hard work and commitment she showed, and for her very impressive performance.
Basmala took part in the finals following a visit to HAB by the Speakers Trust earlier this term to lead a public speaking training workshop for Year 10 students. At the end of the workshop they picked several students who they felt performed particularly well during the workshop.
All shortlisted students then performed their speeches at assemblies where staff and students voted for the speaker they wanted to represent HAB at the Regional Finals and compete against students from other Southwark schools.
Basmala won the vote for a speech entitled ‘All pain is human pain’, which explored the problem of viewing refugees as intangible statistics and the need to change public attitudes by humanising these media myths.
A massive 'well done' to the winners on the night, who were: Josephine from Notre Dame RC Secondary Girls School, Eden from Sacred Hearts Catholic School, and Angel from UAE South Bank.
