Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month
This term, we will be celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month here at HAB.
During tutor time, students are going to learn about some truly inspiring members of the LGBTQ+ community. We’ll be looking at the former Prime Minster of Iceland, Johanna Siguroardóttir and gold medal winning, Nicola Adams to name but a couple.
During these sessions students will find out about how the world has treated people from the LGBTQ+ community and how we can move forward to support the LGBTQ+ community by promoting individual liberty, mutual respect and acceptance of those who have different faiths and beliefs.
Over the past week, students have been studying our LGBTQ+ display and asking lots of questions. What does queer mean? What does it mean if someone is non-binary transgender? Armed with the answers to these questions, the students at HAB are becoming more aware of what it means to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
"Inspirational"
The girls have said the following things during our discussions:
“Celebrating LGBTQ+ month is important because it reminds us that we are all human and should be treated the same as everyone else.”
“It is important to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month at HAB because everyone has their own opinion about what they want to be. The people in the display are inspirational because they stand up for their rights!”
“She sets the message that your sexuality should not get in the way of your aspirations and goals. She didn’t let anything get in the way of her winning her gold medals!”
“Jack Monroe inspires me because they stand up for what they feel… Jack doesn’t want to be called he or she because they are non-binary . . .We should all be allowed to be who we want to be. Society shouldn’t judge us based on gender stereotypes!”
