Health & Social Care

The study of Health and Social Care at Harris Academy Bermondsey provides substantive academic knowledge as well as disciplinary knowledge and a more practical experience of what affects health and social care in society.

Our curriculum looks to examine all the different factors (physical, social and cultural and economic) that can influence an individual’s growth and development from infancy to old age, with specific exposure given to major lifechanging events like marriage or parenthood.

Upon these foundations, the course is designed in a modular fashion to then examine the different health and social care services, ‘care values’ and their importance in making sure that the people who use these services get the care they need.

Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their disciplinary knowledge and these care values practically. In addition, students will develop the disciplinary knowledge necessary to interpret data about someone’s state of health in order to design a plan that will allow them to improve their health and wellbeing. This course will help to develop transferable skills and knowledge, such as self-evaluation and research skills, which will benefit students wherever they progress to next.

The course is structured in a vertical fashion. Units are taught discretely and ensure thorough understanding of each key concept prior to work being submitted. This approach benefits students as they can then, where appropriate, consider each subsequent piece of learning with a sound grounding in concepts that have gone before, so working in a cumulative fashion with students gradually and methodically building up a working knowledge of the core concepts relevant to their learning.

Over time, we segment the curriculum as and when is pertinent to make sure students’ theoretical knowledge is closely applied to the most up-to-date case studies of the day.
