Careers & University
At HAB6 we support our students to complete the destination that is right for them. 6th form students follow different careers programmes in year 12 and year 13 to prepare them for the future. In year 13 all 6th form students are assigned a careers tutor who supports them in preparing applications to ensure they are well supported in accessing the opportunity of their choosing. In addition to this, students will benefit from an external careers advisor.
UCAS
The university route continues to be the most popular destination at HAB6. To support students, they will complete a series of lessons during tutor time to guide them on how to write an effective personal statement in year 12. All students in year 12 are set up on Unifrog and are assigned tasks to help them discover the world of higher education.
Once applications have been submitted all year 13 lessons complete a series of financial literacy lessons that will support them in how to make an application to student finance and how to budget. As well as this, students will be prepared on how to choose their firm and conditional offer and what the process of results day looks like.
Work Experience Placements and Apprenticeships
All students will complete a work experience placement at the end of July. They will be supported in finding a placement. Students may choose to complete additional work placements with partnerships established at the school with companies such as EPR Architects, Moorfields Eye Hospital. Participating in programmes such as these has allowed students to secure apprenticeship placements. Blueprint and Construction Youth Trust work closely with the Sixth Form to provide students with the employability skills to thrive in any work placement.
With companies such as CTM pathway, Speakers for School and Access Aspiration students are supported to find work experience placement tailored to their interests. Apart from this by the end of year 12 all students will have been taught how to complete a CV and a cover letter. As well as this, in the autumn term year 13 are taken to What Career, What Uni which provides students with a final opportunity to talk to a vast amount of apprenticeship and university providers.
HAB6 parents
At HAB6 we understand the importance of working in partnership with parents to ensure students access the career pathway that is right for them. At the end of year 12 all parents are invited to an information evening.
HAB6 Context for UCAS
Harris Academy Bermondsey is an 11-18 all girls’ comprehensive school in inner London. HAB serves a vibrant and diverse neighbourhood with high levels of both deprivation and gentrification. At least half of the girls at HAB are entitled to free school meals.
All HAB girls follow an EBacc + Arts curriculum through to GCSE, with the aim of ensuring that each of them has the opportunity to compete for top university places or higher level apprenticeships, regardless of her socio-economic background.
Our Sixth Form opened in September 2015, continuing this pursuit of academic rigour for all students. As such, HAB6 offers a small and select group of facilitating A-Levels (English Literature, History, French, Geography, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics), alongside A-Level Sociology and Business Studies BTEC Extended Diploma.
Our current Year 13 students were not entered for AS examinations as we made the decision to go fully linear in September 2017, with all students now following 3 A-Levels or equivalent.
