Student Leadership

At Harris Academy Bermondsey, we believe every student has the potential to lead. Our Student Leadership programme provides meaningful opportunities for girls to take responsibility, shape the school community, and develop the confidence, character and ambition that define life at HAB. Just as our enrichment and trips programmes broaden horizons, student leadership gives girls the chance to make a real impact every day.

Our leadership structure is built around a range of roles, each designed to nurture different strengths and interests. The HAB Government sits at the heart of this. Elected by their peers, members work closely with staff to represent the student voice, influence academy decisions and organise events that promote inclusion, participation and school pride. Their work ensures that every girl feels heard and helps build a culture rooted in respect and collaboration.

Our House Captains lead with energy and enthusiasm across our house system. They champion healthy competition, encourage involvement in house events and inspire team spirit across different year groups. By motivating their teams and celebrating collective success, House Captains help weave together a vibrant and supportive school community.

The role of Prefect is a valued and respected position at HAB. Prefects support the smooth running of the school, act as visible role models, and help reinforce the values and expectations that make our academy a safe and welcoming place to learn. Through responsibilities such as assisting at key events, guiding younger students and working alongside staff, Prefects develop communication, leadership and problem-solving skills that will stay with them long after they leave HAB.

Our HAB Ambassadors represent the academy at events, open days and visits. They showcase life at HAB with confidence and warmth, acting as knowledgeable guides for families, community partners and visiting schools. Their professionalism highlights the pride our students take in their academy and the positive relationships they build.

Leadership at HAB is also about compassion. Peer Mentors and Mental Health Ambassadors play an important role in supporting well-being, promoting inclusion and creating a culture where every student feels valued. They work together to raise awareness, offer support and champion a community built on understanding.

Across all roles, our Student Leadership programme empowers every girl to step forward, find her voice and make a difference. It is a powerful part of our personal development journey — helping our students grow into thoughtful, resilient and socially responsible young women.
