Celebrating Shakespeare and The Windrush

Celebrating Shakespeare and The Windrush

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Georgia from the Globe Theatre to the HAB Library for an engaging workshop exploring Windrush history and Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Through a range of interactive drama activities, students explored the human experience of migration and made connections between the experiences of the Windrush Generation, Shakespeare's characters and modern society. Students considered themes such as cultural exchange, inclusion, exclusion and discrimination, while reflecting on how these experiences continue to shape people's lives today.

The workshop was highly interactive, with students taking part in drama games, discussion activities and tableaux exercises. Students voted with their feet, worked collaboratively to represent ideas physically and shared their opinions before developing and refining their thinking through discussion. These activities helped students build their understanding of key historical concepts while developing their confidence, communication skills and ability to work as a team.

It was fantastic to see students so actively engaged throughout the session. The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for students to explore an important part of British history, make meaningful connections with literature and deepen their understanding of the experiences that connect people across different times and cultures.

One student summed up the experience perfectly: "It was amazing and I really enjoyed it a lot. I really liked it because we learnt and had fun at the same time."
