Power of Voice: Year 8 Students Make Their Voices Heard

This year, Ms Daltrey’s Year 8 English class took part in the Power of Voice project, organised by the fantastic team at the National Literacy Trust and poet Tariq Brown.

Through a series of workshops, students explored social issues that mattered to them, using poetry to express their thoughts, experiences and ideas. They worked closely with Tariq Brown, developed their confidence as writers, and produced a collection of thoughtful and moving poems.

Students shared their work with one another throughout the project, and several were brave enough to perform their poems to the wider school community in assemblies.

We are incredibly proud of the maturity, creativity and courage our students showed. They embraced challenging topics and demonstrated the power of using their voices to raise awareness, inspire others and spark important conversations.

Selecting poems for publication was a difficult task, and only six could be chosen for the project’s fantastic online zine. You can read the published poems here: The Power of Voice Zine 2026 or click the zine below.

A huge thank you to the National Literacy Trust and Tariq Brown for providing such an inspiring opportunity for our students.
