Year 8 Discover the Power of First Impressions in the Library

Year 8 Discover the Power of First Impressions in the Library

This half term, Year 8 students have been taking part in an exciting exploration of the Library, focusing on a fresh and thoughtful approach to choosing books.

Rather than selecting novels based purely on their covers, students have been encouraged to delve deeper by engaging with opening lines. This activity has challenged them to make predictions about the story, consider the genre, identify the atmosphere, and analyse the most powerful and intriguing words chosen by the author.

To support this, a selection of books was carefully wrapped in paper, hiding their covers from view. With no visual cues to rely on, students had to focus entirely on the writer’s language. This encouraged them to think more critically about how a story begins and to form their own interpretations based on the text alone.

The activity has helped students to move beyond snap judgements based on images and aesthetics, instead fostering a greater appreciation for the craft of writing and the richness of storytelling. It has also opened up opportunities for students to discover books they might not otherwise have chosen.

We are delighted to see Year 8 students developing confidence as thoughtful, curious readers-ready to explore new genres and authors with an open mind.
