Year 9 Students Explore Art at Dulwich Picture Gallery

Year 9 Students Explore Art at Dulwich Picture Gallery

Year 9 students considering GCSE Art enjoyed a recent visit to Dulwich Picture Gallery, where they explored both historic and contemporary artwork.

The day began in the gallery, where students spent time looking closely at a range of classical paintings, thinking about different techniques and styles. Many were also struck by the setting itself, with its impressive architecture and calm, reflective atmosphere.

Students then took part in a hands-on workshop led by a visiting artist. Using their observations as inspiration, they worked collaboratively to create a sculptural piece, before developing their ideas further through drawing. The session encouraged creativity, experimentation, and trying out new materials in unexpected ways.

Students spoke enthusiastically about the experience. One said they had “never visited anywhere like it before,” while another commented, “The workshop was so much fun—I would never have thought of using masking tape in that way.”

Asyia added: “The gallery was beautiful, I’ve never been somewhere like that before. The architecture and the paintings were very impressive. The workshop was so unusual and creative. I can’t wait for the next workshop.”

The visit is part of a wider project, with two follow-up workshops taking place back at school. These sessions will allow students to build on their ideas and continue developing their artistic skills.

Overall, the trip gave students a valuable insight into what studying GCSE Art could be like, and we look forward to seeing how their work develops in the coming weeks.
