Year 8 Students Explore DNA and Space Science at Imperial College London
Year 8 students recently enjoyed an exciting educational trip to Imperial College London, where they took part in hands-on workshops led by university students. The visit combined biology and space science, giving pupils a taste of real scientific investigation.

In one workshop, students extracted DNA from strawberries using simple household materials. By mashing the fruit and adding a mixture of washing-up liquid, salt, and alcohol, they were able to see strands of DNA appear before their eyes. The activity helped bring classroom learning to life, showing how genetic material can be isolated and observed without advanced equipment. Students also had the opportunity to examine their own cheek cell swabs under a microscope, giving them a closer look at the cells that contain their DNA.
"We actually saw DNA with our own eyes."
"It came out in big clumps I didn't expect that at all."

Alongside this, students explored the fascinating topic of spectroscopes, learning how scientists study gases in stars and planets. By examining light and colour, they discovered how different elements can be identified in space—just like astronomers do when analysing distant galaxies.
The workshops were led by degree students, giving pupils the chance to ask questions and learn more about studying science at university. The trip not only deepened their understanding of key scientific concepts but also inspired many to consider future careers in STEM.
This visit is part of an ongoing partnership between HAB and Imperial College Outreach, aimed at enriching science education and providing meaningful real-world experiences. With more visits planned for KS3 students in the coming months and throughout the year, this collaboration continues to offer exciting opportunities for pupils to engage with science beyond the classroom.
Overall, it was a highly engaging and memorable experience that sparked curiosity and enthusiasm for science.
