The Jack Petchey Regional Finals Speak Out Challenge at HAB

Jack Petchey

This year's Jack Petchey regional finals unfolded at Harris Academy Bermondsey on the 7th of February, a significant event stemming from Radiyat's triumph in last year's regional final at St. Thomas the Apostle’s College with her compelling speech, "Bring back shame."

3

Sixteen students from diverse schools across Southwark took the stage, each sharing a speech profoundly significant to them. I must commend them – they were all astounding, a sentiment echoed by many in the audience.

Our timekeepers for the night were our very own Melody and Yasmine from Year 10, who graciously volunteered to manage the timing during the speeches.

5

At the event's commencement, HAB's principal, Gizle Landman, offered valuable advice to the speakers, encouraging them to speak slowly, breathe, and express themselves eloquently. Their adherence to this counsel enabled the audience to absorb and appreciate each speech.

4

Radiyat, last year's victor, delivered a motivational speech to the current speakers, assuring them that irrespective of the outcome, they were all winners, embarking on a promising journey. This alleviated many nerves and prepared them for their presentations.

While we heard from numerous talented students from different Southwark schools, a special mention goes to Year 10 HAB students:

Ismot with "School doesn't prepare you for the real world,"
Ash with "The life of a young carer," and
Summer with "The flaws of the education system."

During the interval, the audience were treated to a woodwind piece by HAB’s own Blessed (flute), Fatim (clarinet), and Isabella (clarinet). The event concluded with a breathtaking singing performance by Davinia and Zainab.

1

The judging panel included notable figures like Eniola Alonge, Chelsea Sampson, Gabriel May, Hypatia Ndege, James Roberts, Joshua Tulloch, Josie Verghese, and Mariam Bakre.

As the last speech concluded, the audience erupted in applause and shouts of joy. The atmosphere was vibrant, with people jumping for joy, proud parents emitting screams, and energetic friends offering shout outs. Every individual was emotionally moved by different speeches, and everyone left with a smile.

Although victory eluded us this time, our determination remains steadfast to bring home the medal next year!
