Black History Month 2020 at HAB
A message about Black History Month from Vice Pricipal Ms Harris.
As many of you will be aware, the 1st October marks the start of Black History Month. This year at HAB, we are encouraging staff and students to dig deep, to uncover the lesser-told stories of those that have been written out of history, and to reflect on the richness it brings to our understanding of the world around us.
In our Personal Development curriculum, students are reading about some of these stories in their literacy sessions, and at lunchtimes students are being exposed to events and talks that are happening throughout the month which they can engage with inside and outside of HAB.
At HAB, Black History Month is not a month for one off, tokenistic events, but rather to act as an opportunity for us to dig deep into our subjects, our own knowledge, and challenge the often systemic racist concepts of our subjects and the way they have been constructed over time. It is through this deep work that we will enable systemic and sustainable change in improving BAME representation in our subjects; not only in the curriculum itself, but in those that continue to study it as an academic discipline.
