Hospital Heroes Club Teaches Year 7 About Medicine
Our top-achieving students from Year 7 have begun a special project with King's College London to introduce them to the world of medicine.
Hospital Heroes is an after-school club run by the Outreach for Medicine Department at King’s College London.
"The aim of the programme is to increase students’ awareness and knowledge of the range of careers which exist in the healthcare sector as well as the qualifications and skills needed to pursue a role in this industry," said Ms Cowley.
The programme, which includes sessions at school and also visits to King's, is open to 30 of our top-achieving science students from Year 7 who will then participate in the programme again in Year 8 and 9.
The programme this year has been about the different healthcare professionals who are important in a patient's recovery from a suspected broken ankle, including:
- A&E doctors
- Radiologists
- Surgeons
- Pharmacists
- Physiotherapists
Students have learnt the steps involved if they want to work in these professions, including the GCSEs, A-Levels and degrees needed to qualify.
The students have also performed practical skills used by each professional in their day to day work (including creating sutures, pictured below) in order to better understand what the job entails.
