'La Casa de Bernarda Alba' - Raveeha, Year 10, Reports
Raveeha, Year 10, reports on a recent trip to see La Casa de Bernarda Alba by Federico García Lorca.
Students from Year 11 and a handful of younger girls attended The Arundel Centre in February to watch La Casa de Bernarda Alba, a play written by one of the most famous Spanish playwrights, Federico García Lorca.
Miss Valentin and Miss Owen took the girls in the evening. La Casa de Bernarda Alba is set in 1930s Spain during the Spanish Civil War. It portrays how society had different and complex expectations from others. The play explores themes of repression, passion and conformity through the depiction of a matriarch’s domination of her five daughters. The main character is the mother, Bernarda Alba, who has to take on the role of a father after her husband passes away and she has to care for her five daughters.
Miss Valentin said that she ‘felt happy to be able to provide students with this opportunity and experience’. She was also glad that students were able to learn about another culture and language. HAB students were the youngest in the theatre as La Casa de Bernarda Alba is studied for A Levels. We were proud that they were able to understand an A Level play. This was the first time that the play was performed in Spanish with English subtitles.
