KS4 curriculum
BTEC Level 2 Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma in Business
This course will give you an introduction to the different types of businesses there are in the UK and how they operate. It will give you the opportunity to look at how small local businesses work compared to large national and international companies.
You will have a chance to look at how businesses calculate their profit, monitor their success, the communication methods they use and how they try to make sure their customers are satisfied.
You will also learn numerous extremely useful skills which will help you when you enter the world of work. These skills include written and verbal communication techniques, applying for jobs, budgeting, and many more.
During the course we aim to provide you with contact with real businesses and real business people. You will also be required to independently investigate numerous businesses across the country.
This course is assessed through 100% coursework and you can achieve a qualification equivalent to between one and four GCSEs.
Units are worth between 5 and 10 credits depending on their size and hours required to complete them. Achieving the following number of credits will determine the number of GCSEs you will achieve.
- 15 Credits Certificate = 1 GCSE
- 30 Credits Extended Certificate= 2 GCSEs
- 60 Credits Diploma= 4 GCSEs
All coursework is graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction. (Pass = C grade, Merit = B and Distinction = A).

Unit 3: Financial Forecasting*
Unit 4: People in Organisations
Unit 7: Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
Unit 8: Business Communication though documentation
Unit 11: Customer Relations in Business
Unit 16: Business Enterprise
*these units are compulsory
KS5 curriculum
BTEC Level 2 Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma in Business
This course is similar to that offered at KS4 but is completed over one year at sixth form. It is a useful introduction to Business Studies for those who have not studied the subject before. It provides a good base for students wanting to move on to advanced level courses. It is a good complement to a wide range of subjects and will give you an insight into how businesses operate, and at the same time making you a more effective employee.
BTEC Level 3 Certificate & Subsidiary Diploma
This course allows you to investigate businesses more closely and provides a direct pathway to employment or tertiary education.
In the first year of the course, students are expected to complete three units worth a total of 30 credits. This is the equivalent of an AS qualification. The following year a further 30 credits would be completed, totalling 60 credits for an A2 equivalent. It is also 100% coursework based which will require students to have excellent organisation skills and the ability to meet deadlines across the duration of the qualification.

2 further optional units which will be negotiated with students based on interest and resources.
