A Wild Dinosaur in the Restaurant - World Book Day 2022

MY7A2992Jeriel reports on what happened at Harris Academy Bermondsey on World Book Day 2022.

On Thursday 3rd March, HAB celebrated World Book Day. We celebrate World Book Day to demonstrate our love of reading and, by extension, to encourage students to read more outside of school.

One of the main aims of the day, according to the World Book Day website, is to, ‘encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading.’

Many students dressed up as book characters from some of their favourite books, in order to raise money for literacy projects at HAB.

On the day you might have spotted the Mad Hatter working hard in lessons, the Queen of Hearts teaching Spanish, Katniss Everdeen teaching French, Marley’s ghost wandering around school halls and a wild dinosaur in the restaurant!

Here at HAB, it’s clear to see that whilst we have explored the pleasures of reading that World Book Day envisions, but I also want to take a moment to share the benefits of reading. Clark and DeZoya (2011) found that people who read more are also better readers and according to other research, reading for just six minutes can reduce stress by 68%.

We don’t just dress up and give students a £1 book voucher. As part of our celebrations, we also give every student a book. This year we handed out:

  • Year 7 – Choice of book from the selection provided
  • Year 8 - Peak Peril by Sharna Jackson
  • Year 9 - Think Like A Boss by Rashmi Sirdeshpande
  • Year 10 - Letter From Birmingham Jail by Dr Martin Luther King Jr
  • Year 11 - We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  • Year 12 – Africa’s Tarnished Name by Chinua Achebe.

Quotes from staff

“It isn’t only for young children; it’s for the old and young.” – Ms Morris

Quotes from students

“World Book Day is a fun away of celebrating books with people who don’t like reading. It gives people the chance to become more enthusiastic about reading,” says Noor, Year 8.

“World Book Day is a significant event in the calendar because it helps people to see how much fun books can be.  My favourite thing about World Book Day is having an opportunity to express ourselves by dressing up!” says, Yumi, Year 8

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.” – Charles W. Eliot

World Book Day is also a registered charity, that focuses on providing children and young people with their very own book. If you would like to donate to their cause, feel free to click on the link below:
