International Women's Day - Sara, Year 10, Reports
Sara, Year 10, reports on what happened at Harris Academy Bermondsey on International Women's Day.
At HAB we commemorated International Women’s Day by wearing purple bracelets, which symbolise justice and dignity. International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on the 8th of March to commend the achievements of women globally and reflect on how far we have come to earn our human rights.
On the day we demonstrated HAB values with Ms Hussein taking photos to illustrate the empowerment within our school surrounding the theme of “Balance for Better”.
Year 10 HAB student Mabinty, who took part in the photo booth event, commented on how she “liked being part of the experience”. HAB FemSoc engaged themselves in the occasion through a sale including special FemSoc books. They also handed out stickers to highlight the unity and strength of women and girls in our society.
Teachers put pledges on their doors to reflect on what they hope the future of gender equality and women’s rights will be. Overall, the event created a wave of pride and joy among HAB girls. However, some reflected on how our fight for equality is not yet over, with one HAB student mentioning how the celebration of International Women’s Day made her “very aware of contemporary issues surrounding gender equality”.
