STEM in Transit Evening for Year 6 - Report and Pictures
We welcomed our class of 2026 last night for the inaugural STEM In Transit open evening to give a taster of science at HAB and assist with the transition from primary school.
Visitors were treated to live heart dissections and a taste of the activities offered by our STEM Clubs. The evening had a Polar theme as part of the Polar Explorer Programme from STEM Learning UK. Guests planned a Polar Explorer expedition - creating an artic animal and burning crisps to determine which would give them enough energy to get to the South Pole.
“I enjoyed the experiments because they were interactive, and the HAB students took care of us,” said one Year 6 pupil. Using dry ice, the current Year 7 demonstrated the path of a laser and our Post 16 Physicists gave the new Year 7s static electric shocks using a Van de Graaff generator.
We hosted three STEM Ambassadors from Laing O'Rourke, Excogis and Imperial College who gave inspirational talks on their journeys in science so far - fantastic role models for our HAB Girls and visitors.
Parents and Year 6 pupils were also treated to lessons from the Heads of Biology, Physics and Chemistry and learned about weird cells, magnetic fields and the chemistry of hot and cold reactions.
Dr Hay’s experiMENTAL chemistry show used liquid nitrogen to shrink a balloon and create a banana hammer to bang a nail into a piece of wood – much to the audience's surprise! And if that didn’t shock them the WOOSH bottle certainly did…
It was a fantastic evening with over 350 pupils and their parents in attendance. One parent commented: “I enjoyed the whole aspect of the open evening, particularly the warm welcome”.
We were delighted to host the incoming Year 7s, class of 2026, and are looking forward to seeing them all again at our future transition events in the coming months!
