At Harris Academy Bermondsey EAL support is given, where required, to students whose first language is not English. This support is mostly given by teaching in partnership with subject teachers and by developing a range of differentiated materials. However support is also given on an individual or small group tutorial basis whenever necessary.
At Harris Academy, Bermondsey 55.4% of students are from minority ethnic groups, 52.9% use English as an additional language and approximately 4.1% are refugee and asylum seekers. Over 54 languages are spoken and the five main languages other than English are Yoruba (10.4%), Bengali (7.17%), Krio (3.2%), Somali (2.8%) and Twi (2.09%). The pupils are classified according to Stages. Stage 1 is 0.1%, stage 2 is 1.6%, stage 3 is 2.2% and stage 4 is 53.7%.
