'Crime Scene' Inspires Creative Writing in Year 8
A classroom 'crime scene' has been inspiring Year 8 to turn detective and think about how to write a great crime story. In small groups, girls examined various pieces of evidence located in different 'stations' around the classroom.
The girls were asked to decipher how the crime took place and who was to blame before writing their story. The wide array of evidence meant it was a complex scenario which allowed students to think innovatively and adopt their own unique narrative voice.
"Creative writing should be fun and assuming the role of detective was a good way to help the girls develop their story ideas," said Ms Mbuyamba. "By capturing their imaginations, students were in turn able to think about the story that they wanted to tell."
"The setup of the class room was really amazing," says Maria, Year 8. "The outline of the body and pieces of evidence really forced me to think outside of the box”.
Zoe agrees: “I was able to work in groups and become a detective. This activity really helped me to think carefully about the different ways I could engage my reader”.
