There were tears of happiness, cheers and smiles at Harris Academy Bermondsey today as Year 11 students received their GCSE results.

This is the first year of results under the new system which sees Maths and English graded on a scale of 1-9, and HAB girls were justifiably proud of their results.

• 10 students achieved the top grades of A, A*, 7, 8 or 9 at every one of their EBacc subjects
• 30 student achieved 8 or more of the very top grades.

“The large group of students getting top grades demonstrates that Harris Academy Bermondsey girls are achieving awesome results at the most academically challenging examinations we have seen for generations,” said Gillian Hodgson, Acting Co-principal.

Jadesola (above, right) gained a 9 in English Literature and English Language and A grades in Additional Science and Business. “I feel ecstatic and so happy that my hard work paid off,” she said, saying that her grades were partly a result of the dedication of her teachers. “They always took the extra time to help us when we needed it.”

Bushra (pictured above with Ms Hodgson) received all A, A* and 8-9 grades. “I was so nervous this morning and I feel like maybe I didn’t believe in myself, but now I’m just so happy, I’ve done it!” she said. “Our teachers were with us the whole way, they were just amazing. I know my parents are going to be proud of me.”

Lisa (below) also received strong grades of all A, A* and 8-9. “I was so shocked to see my results! Now I’m going to do my A levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics,” she said. “In the future I’d like to get into engineering.”

Students were given their results individually, meaning that they had the chance to talk them over with their teachers and discuss their future options. “I’m so proud of the girls for their consistent hard work and today they are finally getting their recognition,” said Ms Harvey, Head of Key Stage 3 English. “There’s some girls here that walked in today not believing in themselves and now they can walk out proud and ready for the future.”

Asked for her advice for younger pupils, Lisa said “I’d tell them to not be afraid to ask their teacher if they’re not sure about something. I know there’s a lot of pressure, but it’s OK to just ask for help.”

Arafat, who received grades 7-8 in English and English Language and an A in Geography, said “I’d tell them not to procrastinate on social media and revise!”
