Learning About Career Opportunities in Construction
Six Year 11 students have now completed the Building Bridges to Careers programme run by the Construction Youth Trust.
Throughout the year, these students had worked remotely with Emily from the Construction Youth Trust; they had been lucky enough to have one-to-one mentoring sessions as well as learning all about carving out a career pathway in the construction industry.
This final workshop gave the students not only a chance to meet Emily in person but also to connect with a group of industry experts, all of whom had taken very different routes into their current roles.
It was a really eye-opening experience for the Year 11s as many of them didn't know that jobs in the construction industry include roles as diverse as marketing, sales, architecture, interior design, project management and human resources.
During this final workshop, the Year 11s learned all about writing attention-grabbing application letters, curating a CV, and succeeding at interview as well as getting to know more about apprenticeships, degrees and on-the-job training that can lead to a career in the construction industry.
The final session of the workshop involved a trip to a building site. Once they arrived at the site, the Year 11s donned hard hats and high vis jackets before getting a tour of the new Almshouses being built on the corner of Reverdy Road and Southwark Park Road- just outside of HAB!
They learned all about the extensive planning and building process, and the very detailed arrangements for removing the crane from the centre of the building once it is complete. Although they were a bit nervous at first, by the end of the visit the girls were confidently speaking with the Project Manager all about his work on the site and how the new housing will positively impact the local community.
Construction Youth is an organisation that "aims to help build a cross-industry partnership and offer students a range of meaningful encounters with employers that widen their career horizons, challenge stereotypes, champion STEM careers and support them to achieve their career ambitions." The year 11s experience on the 17th June certainly filled the brief.
