Careers and Ambition - Guest Speakers Inspire at Careers Day and Theme Day

Ayusat, Meosha and Milly, Year 9, write about our Theme Day last week, which focused on careers and ambition, with an array of guest speakers from industry, finance, fashion and other sectors.

During our first period we looked at women in positions of leadership - powerful and brave women who changed the world by fighting for the rights of women to vote. We also looked at how people can become influenced by stereotypes.

Year 10 students got to hear from two CEOs - Claire from Trainline (pictured below) and Aga from Tech innovation. Both taught students about why you have to work really hard to get your dream.

Theme Day 2

The HAB community has been learning more about LGBT issues this month and we then got to hear from Shanika, an actress from the film Adulthood. Shanika taught us about the stereotypes surrounding LGBT people and about how the most important thing is to be true to yourself.

We then went on to look at enrichment and the important skills that girls need to develop and that employers value. We then looked at CVs and covering letters and also focused on what skills Year 10 need to develop over the next two years so they can have a good CV.

Our last session was on budgeting, with students learning about VAT and National Insurance. We had to write our own pay slips depending on the jobs we had, looked at how much rent and all the other bills adults have to pay.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our visitors and the HAB community for arranging this day. Written by Ayusat, Meosha and Milly, Year 9.

Careers Day for Year 10

We also had a separate Careers Day a few days before. Students spent the first two hours working on their CVs and covering letters, followed by a marketplace activity where they had the opportunity to talk with to our guest speakers about their career journeys.

Guest speakers included senior managers from Lloyds, lawyers from Trowers & Hamlins law firm, an urban designer and planner, an entrepreneur from the world of fashion and a number of engineers from Land Rover Jaguar and BP.

In the afternoon students completed a mock interview (picture above) and received feedback on their CV and covering letter.

Yr10 Careers Day 2018 038

What students said...

"Careers day was successful due to the fact that we were able to interact with a wide range of people from different professions.

"The time spent with these volunteers allowed us to reflect on our own GCSEs and the paths that we will take after our time at HAB. First we were taught how to write and organise a CV based on a job we would like to apply for in the future. This session gave us a clear insight into how to go about applying for a job. This helped us to  understand what future employers will expect from us when applying for a job.

"In the afternoon we used these skills to complete a mock interview. This gave us an insight into how interviews are conducted and what will be expected from us e.g. smiling, shaking hands and talking loudly! We received feedback on our CV and on our interview technique and this made us feel like young adults who will be ready to conquer the city!"
