KS4 curriculum

AQA Applied GCSE Health & Social Care

 

This course is a vocational course equivalent to one or two GCSEs, depending on the option chosen. The single award is assessed by one unit of coursework and one examination over two years and the double award is assessed by two units of coursework and two external examinations over two years.


Both courses will give students an introduction to the Health & Social Care industries. These include child care; nursing, health care, social workers and occupational therapy just to name a few. It will give students an insight to the way in which health care workers undertake their jobs, issues that they face and the policies and practices they follow.

As part of the course it is expected that students will complete an appropriate work experience placement during the first year of the course.

 

BTEC First in Health and Social Care

 

BTEC Health and Social Care is a vocational course which focus very closely on working the health and social care industries. It is a course which has the option of either two or four GCSEs equivalence. If you follow the four GCSEs pathway, you will complete a total of six units over two years, but you will be awarded two GCSEs if you complete three units. All coursework is graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction. A Pass is worth a C grade, Merit a B and Distinction an A.

The course is assessed entirely through coursework and it is important that you are good at meeting deadlines. Your teacher will ask you to submit your coursework many times over the year to ensure that you are on track and working to your target grade. You can achieve between one and four GCSEs.

Units are worth between 5 and 20 credits depending on their size and hours required to complete them. Achieving the following number of credits will determine the number of GCSEs you will achieve.

15 Credits Certificate = 1 GCSE

30 Credits Extended Certificate= 2 GCSEs

60 Credits Diploma= 4 GCSEs

All coursework is graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction. (Pass = C grade, Merit = B and Distinction = A).

Unit 5: Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting
Unit 6: Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care
Unit 7: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
Unit 8: Human Lifespan Development
Unit 9: Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care
Unit 10: Health and Social Care Services
Unit 11: The Impact of Diet on Health

 

Units 1 and 2 are compulsory and must be completed by all students. Your teachers will choose with you the remaining units that you will complete.

During the course will be provide you with practical ways to promote the principles of Health and Social Care. You will also be expected to complete your work experience in a Health and Social setting for one of your modules.

 

KS5 curriculum

BTEC Level 2 Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development

This course is similar to that offered at KS4 but is completed over one year at sixth form. It is a useful introduction to Child Care for those who have not studied the subject before. It provides a good base for students wanting to move on to advanced level courses. It is a good complement to a wide range of subjects and will give you an insight into how businesses operate, and at the same time making you a more effective employee.

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Health and Social Care

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development

BTEC Nationals are QCF Level 3 qualifications designed to provide highly specialist work-related qualifications in a range of vocational sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment.

In the first year of the course, students are expected to complete six units worth a total of 60 credits. This is the equivalent of an AS qualification. The following year a further 60 credits would be completed, totalling 120 credits 2 A level equivalent. It is also 100% coursework based which will require students to have superior organisation skills and to meet deadlines across the duration of the qualification. The teachers will expect you to you stick to clear deadlines in order for you to achieve the desired grades and support any application to university.
