The Modern Foreign Languages Department is responsible for the teaching of French and Spanish at Harris Academy Bermondsey. Students study French or Spanish at KS3 (Years 7 and 8) and then have the opportunity to study either GCSE French or Spanish at KS4. Students may then continue to study either language at A level provided they have obtained a grade B or above at GCSE. The ability to speak more than one language is a valuable skill and provides great opportunities in relation to employment and education as well as promoting an appreciation of other cultures and broadening students’ horizons.
The Language Subject area promotes Community Languages and bilingual students are encouraged to take a GCSE in their home language. Bengali and Turkish are taught weekly after school.

Homework
At KS3, homework is set once a week and students are expected to learn new vocabulary weekly. At KS4, students should spend a minimum of an hour a week to revise vocabulary and complete homework. At KS5, students should aim to practise their language skills on a daily basis, read and listen to authentic material.
Helping and supporting your child
Parents and carers do not have to speak a foreign language to help and support their child. Showing an interest in the language and speaking about their learning experience at school may encourage them. It is crucial that students learn vocabulary and practise the language skills as often as possible.
Parents and students are also encouraged to look at the MFL section of HAB Radio : http://www.hablive.co.uk/french-blog/
