Curriculum

Mathematics at Harris Academy Bermondsey is an exciting and challenging subject that encourages students to develop good mathematical and personal, learning and thinking skills. Students are given the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways including paired and group work as well as using ICT, digital media and voting software.

Students at Keystage 3 follow the National Curriculum for Mathematics and there is an emphasis on developing the ability to communicate mathematical ideas and follow logical processes. Students also focus on developing their functionality in Mathematics through relevant and current real world projects.

At Keystage 4 students focus on their GCSE course in Mathematics. This course encourages students to work independently and collaboratively and to develop their analytical skills. Students sit their GCSE exam when they are ready to do so. Keystage 4 students may opt to have a Maths tutor through our business mentoring partnership scheme.

Students at Keystage 5 follow the Edexcel AS Mathematics course and focus on core maths and statistics.

We have organised several trips over the last few years to Price Waterhouse Coopers and the London Zoo, the National Science Museum and we regularly attend Challenge events at other schools in Southwark and other academies across the Harris Federation.  Our year 11 students have the opportunity to attend a residential revision trip and participate in lots of challenging activities.

All in all, students have a great time learning this important subject!

Homework

Homework is set in accordance with the academy policy. Students in Mathematics will receive at least one homework each week, which should be completed to the best of their ability. Some homeworks are set on www.mymaths.co.uk . There is a weekly homework club for students who want some extra help with their work.
